This product was made based on a mini series of 3 videos created on my Youtube channel to demonstrate how a toon character can be created from absolute zero in ZBrush.

What will be downloaded?

A .rar file (Winrar) containing the following folders:

  • bpr_filters: Contains bpr filters that were used to generate the final scene seen.
  • materials: Contains all the materials used in the scene.
  • project: Contains .zpr files with all material settings, render settings, lights, etc., all used to generate the final image seen.
  • ref: Contains the image used as a reference for the creation of this project.
  • render: Contains the image generated from the rendering.
  • render_settings: Contains all the settings used for rendering the final scene seen.
  • spotlight: A file used for the Spotlight tool, which stores predefined references, and used in the creation of the project.
  • ztools: Contains only the ztools of the project models.

FAQ

1 - How can I load the final scene seen?

The final scene seen containing all the settings ready for rendering can be loaded by going to File, and clicking on the Load option. The file that must be found and opened is named p3da_fox_project_01.zpr, and is inside the project folder.

2 - How can I reproduce the materials used on the scene?

There are two materials used in the scene, both with toon aspect, but one with contour (outline) and one without it. To define both:

  • 1 - Select the BasicMaterial material from the materials palette,
  • 2 - Go to Material > Modifiers,
  • 3 - Set the following values, ambient 20, Diffuse 100, Specular 0.
  • 4 - Change the Diffuse Line, leaving the two points fully up.

At this point, the object will immediately gain a toon aspect. To create the outline, go to Material > Mixer, and change the values from Outline to 1 (or a value between 0.5 and 1), and Depth to 10 (or a value between 8 and 30.

3 - Is there any teaching material where I can acquire more knowledge about 3D modeling?

Of course. Click here to find informative and educational content about 3D modeling.

4 - How can I render the open scenes?

Click on the square button with the letters BPR at the top right of the program interface. You can also find it in the Render menu (palette), and in BPR RenderPass (subpalette).

5 - How do I change the material of a subtool?

With the subtool selected in the list of subtools, choose any brush (preferably choose the one named Standard).

Make sure that the Material Channel (the M box) option is checked (it is at the top of the program's graphical interface).

Now go to the Color menu, and click on the Fill Object option.

6 - How do I know which material is applied to a subtool?

On the left side of the program interface you will find a box with the current selected material. If you click on it, the program will show you all the materials that can be applied to the subtools.

To find out which material is applied to a particular subtool, click the left mouse button on that box and hold the clicked button. That done, drag the mouse to the subtool to which you want to find out what material is applied. You will notice that the icon on the mouse will change. Once you have positioned it in the desired subtool, release the button, and the material box will be updated to the current material present in the subtool.

7 – How can I open the character models in other 3D applications?

The export of 3D models seen on the scene can be done for the generation of .obj files, for example. The process can be done with one subtool at a time, as well as all the elements seen on the scene. As there are several subtools, it is recommended that you do the following to export everything together:

  • 1. Go to Zplugin > Subtool Master,
  • 2. Click the Export button,
  • 3. Make sure to check the option “Export as single file”,
  • 4. Click the button next to "File format" to select the type of file to be exported (.obj, for example),
  • 5. Click Ok,
  • 6. Choose the location to save the new file.

Once this is done, open another 3D program of your choice and import the generated file. If you want to export one subtool at a time, first select the subtool you want to export, and:

  • 1. Go to Tool > Export,
  • 2. Check the Qud option,
  • 3. Deselect the Txr, Mrg and Grp options,
  • 4. Set Scale to 1 (if the model is imported too small, increase this value),
  • 5. Still inside the Tool, go back to the beginning, and click on the Export option,
  • 6. In the export window, select the location and type of the file to be created,
  • 7. Click Save, and you're done.
